Action Research & Training for Health (ARTH), an Udaipur based non-profit public health society established in 1997, has been providing essential health care to a rural-tribal population of 550,000 in southern Rajasthan. ARTH directly provides primary care, especially reproductive, maternal, neonatal and child health services in two rural-tribal districts of Rajasthan. In 2018, we also began working on the health of older persons.
Three rural health clinics cater to low-income populations – ARTH’s unique 24×7 delivery and newborn care model led by trained nurse-midwives has enabled over 17,000 women to deliver safely and helped over 3,000 low birth weight newborns to survive. Additionally, our field team identifies recently delivered women in the community and supports them and their child in the postpartum period, till 1 year. About 200 village-based women Community Health Entrepreneurs educate and provide contraceptives to young women. Our programme on older persons is working towards enabling healthy ageing in 110 villages.
Through our work, we have been working towards ensuring and/or improving access and information to healthcare resources, with a focus on vulnerable populations. Although the area is characterised as a low-resource setting, we feel that it should not hinder a person’s ability and willingness to remain healthy.
